Reflection #11

  • Why do you believe society is so fascinated with learning about the perpetrators of mass shootings?
    • I believe that society is so fascinated with learning about the perpetrators because people wonder what caused them to do something like committing a mass shooting. I think we watch videos to get backstory because we often times want to see if there is a reason as to why they did what they did but in most cases there isn't a reason. People are also interested in understanding the minds of people who do things like mass shootings.
  • What steps can we as a take, both individually and as a society, to stop mass shooters from copying one another?
    • I think as a society a way that we could stop mass shooters from copying one another would be to stop broadcasting how they did what they did. I think if we didn't give the shooters as much attention as we do it would keep others from doing it because most of the time they are doing it for notoriety and not with an actual reason. I think once we start getting away from putting so much focus on them is when we stop having a problem of the shooters trying to copy on another.
  • What do you see as the benefits of a movement like No Notoriety? What about any drawbacks?
    • I think that the benefits of a movement like No Notoriety is that the shooters won't be seen as someone famous. I do think that this movement is one that a lot of people would get behind because it does talk about the main points that people think about when discussing mass shooters. I do think that the drawbacks would be that people wouldn't know about them and then the victims wouldn't be talked about either.

  1. Great post! I definitely agree that a big reason people are so fascinated about the perpetrators from mass shootings is because we want to know what caused them to do something like that. When it comes to mass shootings, there are so many unknowns that we want answers to. All mass shootings are different, from the perpetrator's gender, age, situation, and also the number of victims. Another part of your blog post that I agree with is that shooters should not be broadcasted in the media as much as they are. After Columbine, everyone knew the names of the perpetrators because they had their whole life stories on the news. But when it came to the victims, we barely heard anything. Lastly, I agree having the No Notoriety Movement in place is a good thing because like you said it will not give them the chance to be famous and some people will not be able to look up to them. A lot of people would definitely like this idea because shooters are already broadcasted too much as it is. Having this movement in place would stop that from happening. A drawback I mentioned in my post is that if the shooters photo isn't out there and they get away, people will not know who to look for. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooter was able to slip away because he dropped his rifle and blended in with the rest of the students. If his photo wasn't out there, law enforcement and civilians would not have been able to identify him and arrest him.

  2. The No Notoriety Movement is something that needs to be put into place cause it limits what information is put out about the shooter. It places more focus on the victims rather than the shooter. This movement could prevent copycat shootings from happening.

  3. This was a great post, nice job! I completely agree, I also feel that society is so fascinated by mass shooters because they want to try and figure out how or why someone could commit such terrible crimes. Even though I have taken many classes that study criminals, I still cannot understand how people could go through with such sad and horrific crimes. I also agree that moving forward we should not give these offenders' any media attention. A lot of offenders' commit these crimes seeking attention and by talking about them on the news after they commit these crimes they receive exactly what they were seeking.

  4. "People are also interested in understanding the minds of people who do things like mass shootings."
I would wager to guess that people find so much interest in following the stories of the killers so they can try to find out as much about the life of the person to try and stop someone who follows a similar path. People may try and understand what could possibly drive someone to perform such a heinous act, yet hardly anyone can truly understand why they would do such a terrible thing.
    Interesting post

  5. Hi Jasmine, nice post! I agree with you that initial curiosity is what drives so many to try and discover who committed a mass shooting and why they did. However, I feel as though the news and social media also play a role in the fascination of these offenders. They spend so much time on the details of the shooters that everyone watching or listening will inevitably learn more about the shooters than the victims. Which is something you included in your second answer. By not broadcasting the details and story of the shooters we could be helping to prevent a future mass shooting.
