Reflection Post #3

When communities have to deal with such traumatic events like mass shootings there is a lot you have to take into consideration like; how the community works and if the people in the community are close. Some of the ways they can respond can be to reach out to the people that are directly effected by it. When they do this they could maybe make a support group for people in the community who feel like they need to talk about what happened. They can reach out to survivors by seeing if they can set something up with the survivors where they can talk to someone or they are able to reach out to people in the community if they feel like they need to talk someone.

As a society I think that we can support the communities by trying to fight for stricter gun control in the US. As society we can band together and try to help fight for a safer place to live without feeling of being in danger everyday. Also I feel like people who require therapy because of the events they have gone through should be able to get it for free or the states should provide them with therapist. States in an effort to prevent school shootings should put more money into certain schools and schools should enforce a stricter bullying policy because many school shooters say that is the reasoning behind it. States should put in more effort in total to be able to handle shooters such as paying for training for there police forces to know how to de-escalate active shooters so they don't have to wait for SWAT to arrive because in the time that it takes for them to arrive the shooter could have already killed multiple people. All in all I believe that society as a whole could do a lot more in the aspect of making life easier for survivors and communities.

  1. I agree with a lot of the points you put in your post! There are a lot of different things a community can do to help the survivors of mass shootings. Reaching out to the people affected is a great thing to do because they are in need of a lot of help. Survivors need someone to talk to and you can be there for them. Also mental health professionals and resources need to be readily available to the survivors because there are some things that they understand that family and friends might not. I like the idea of a community support group is a good idea because the survivors can talk about their experiences. Communities are a good resource to be able to do things for the survivors and victims families. Enacting stricter gun laws is a great idea because it is so easy to obtain a gun. Having free therapy for people who have been through school shootings is a great idea because they went through something very traumatic. Survivors should not have to pay money to get the help they need. Lastly, like you said there should be more training for law enforcement officers on what to do when a school shooting occurs.

  2. Hi Jasmine, I loved your inclusion about the necessity of gun control in our country because I feel this is part of the root of the problem. Voting is a great way we can all do what you suggested, band together to create a safer place. A common response idea that you presented in your blog is providing the proper mental health care to a community after a tragedy. Your inclusion about state funding for these mental health resources is one I had not read in other blogs. And I think that is an important point to make, as it provides a complete plan to getting this community's help, rather than just parts of some ideas.
